Introduction

The School of Textile and Design (STD) at the University of Management and Technology (UMT) offers a wide range of programs in various disciplines including Textile Technology, Textile Management, Fashion and Design, and Fine Arts. The faculty members provide an educational experience that is equivalent to that offered by leading international universities.

The curriculum for each program has its own distinct features. However, common threads of design and problem solving have been woven into the fabric of the curricula to ensure that each participant receives the very best education tailored to the needs of the industry and academia. The textile and fashion design programs aim to prepare graduates for regional as well as global practice. The degree programs emphasize learning the effective use of technology, information resources and communication methods, as well as inculcate in them leadership qualities anchored in ethical and moral principles.

The graduates of STD may work in an international environment. Therefore, class instructions and interaction between students and faculty members are conducted in English to ensure that graduates possess written and spoken fluency in English. This is accomplished foremost in the required laboratory work, term reports, senior design projects and internships. The programs are designed to satisfy the general university requirements. They also meet the criteria adopted by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan.

Aim of the Programs

The degree programs are designed to develop well-rounded individuals who excel academically and are trained to achieve success in all aspects of life. The undergraduate programs have been designed to provide breadth which is essential for preparing individuals to become productive, responsible and conscientious members of the community. They provide focus and depth in one area to prepare students for leadership roles in their professional lives.

Curriculum

The program curriculum has been developed according to the guidelines given by HEC and in consultation with professionals working in industry and academia, from within Pakistan and abroad. It allows flexibility and choice for students and at the same time conforms to the requirements of international professional bodies such as The Textile Institute (TI) UK and Society of Dyers and Colorists (SDC) UK. The curriculum consists of four components:

General education courses comprise of a wide array of courses in mathematics, science, computing, management, social sciences, and humanities. These courses are designed for stimulating students' intellectual, personal, and social development.

Specialization Courses

These courses provide a broad knowledge and skill-base in the student's selected area of specialization.

Technical Electives

The technical elective courses allow the students to fine-tune their curriculum according to their particular interests and need of the employers.

Final Year Project
